The Wendigo is a spirit from Algonquian legend. They were closely associated with cannibalism, and those who resorted to cannibalism could either become Wendigo, or their chosen prey. Wendigo were known to stalk people lost in the winter snow, scaring them, while staying just out of site. The confused and frightened victim would soon become so hopelessly turned around by the Wendigo's tricks that they became easy prey for the voracious creature.
