31 Days of Monsters: Day Thirteen — The Jersey Devil

The Jersey, or Leeds Devil is said to haunt the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey.
Legend says that a woman known as Mother Leeds had been burdened with twelve awful children. Upon finding out she was pregnant a thirteenth time, she proclaimed that she wished the next child would be a devil instead of another ungrateful child. Upon being born, the cursed creature flew up the chimney and disappeared into the sky.
Now and again, people claim to see the creature. Skeptics claim the stories are either fabricated urban legends, or misidentification of native species in the area.

31 Days of Monsters: Day Eleven — A couple of Kobolds

What can I say about Kobolds? They are small, rough, unsavory beasties. Best to steer clear of them.

31 Days of Monsters: Day Nine — The Mole People

I remember seeing "The Mole People" as a kid, and thinking the mole people didn't really look like moles, as much as they resembled the bumpy blackberries in our yard. The original film is black and white, so I have no idea what color the mole people costumes really were, but I think they would have been purple — you know, like the berries.

31 Days of Monsters: Day Seven — A Shallow One

I'm about to head out the door to Trick 'r Tiki, and I realized that I haven't posted today's monster.
I love H.P. Lovecraft, and all of his various creations.  For today's monster, I started to draw a Deep One, one of the fish-human hybrids that swim off the coast of Innsmouth, but he ended up more amusing than terrifying. Putting him in a cheap Fruit-of-the-Looms undershirt and Bermuda shorts, I decided he was from the shallower end of Innsmouth Bay, where the townsfolk were a little too eager to greet their watery kissing-cousins in days gone by. Ew.

31 Days of Monsters: Day Five — Werewolf

In folklore, werewolves weren't always the tragic figures they are now. In the old days people, usually witches and warlocks, chose to become werewolves, by taking part in dark rituals involving animal skins and special ointments made from human fat and herbs.
Today however, most people know werewolves from the movies, where we get the standard mythology — full moon, silver bullets, etc.
To me, werewolves will always be cooler than vampires, which will become apparent when I cover them in an upcoming post.

31 Days of Monsters: Day Three — The Kelly-Hopkinsville Goblins

In 1955, two families found themselves under siege from strange creatures at farmhouse in rural Kentucky. For hours  goblin-like entities terrorized the residents by peering into windows, and grabbing at anyone who ventured outside. Several of the creatures were shot at with rifles, but bounced back up into the air after being hit, seemingly unaffected by the bullets, and even gravity itself. The arrival of the creatures was accompanied by strange lights and sounds in the sky, which leads many UFO buffs to believe the whole event may have been an attempt at alien abduction by the beasts.

31 Days of Monsters: Day One —Children of the Candy Corn

It's the first day of the holy month of October. I'm feeling ambitious and reckless, and I think it's time for a challenge.
So, here's the deal: I am going to post a drawing of a monster ever day leading up to the big event — Halloween.
I will be drawing from literature, film, mythology, folklore, reality and my own imagination. Works will vary in scope and medium, but the key is no duplication and a new post every day no matter what. Challenge extended and accepted. Enjoy.

Sketch to scan

I was feeling artistically unproductive today. I didn't have to go in to work until 2:00 p.m. but all I'd accomplished was a trip to the art store to purchase matte board, and then ripping down the matte board into smaller sizes. I decided to give myself a challenge: sketch to scan in 15 minutes. I chose for my subject the dilemma of housework vs. artwork. This is the result. Not great, but not bad for 15 minutes.
I think I'd like to make this a standing challenge to myself. Whenever I find myself in those lazy moments where I tell myself, "I can't possibly start a new drawing because I just don't have the time before I have to (fill in the blank)," I'll do a 15-minute sketch-to-scan drawing.
