31 Days of Monsters - Day 2: Alphyn

The Alphyn is a rare heraldic creature from European legend. Spectacular in appearance, Alphyns combine the traits of dragons, wolves, goats, eagles and serpents into a fearsome form that has to be seen to be believed. Of course, they also combine the viciousness of those same creatures and should be avoided at all costs.

31 Days of Monsters: Seps

A Seps is a serpent from medieval times that had two legs, a fishlike tail and a venomous bite that can dissolve flesh, bone, leather and even a knights armor. There are very few Seps left in the world and they prefer to remain out of the eyes of men, but they will defend their territory of provoked.

31 Days of Monsters 2014: Cockatrice

I must be in a fowl mood, because today I'm giving you the cockatrice. Often confused with the Basilisk — which I drew last year — the cockatrice is a much smaller two-legged dragon with the head of a rooster. Where the basilisk springs from a snake egg that has been hatched by a chicken, a cockatrice is formed when a chicken egg is incubated by a toad. The stare, touch and even the breath of a cockatrice are deadly. Grinding the eggshell of a hatched cockatrice into the food of an enemy induces madness and eventually death. The surest way of killing a cockatrice is to trick it into looking at itself in a mirror. Presented with its reflection it will tear itself apart in fear of its own horrific appearance. Silly bird.

31 Days of Monsters 2014: Amphisbaena

Amphisbaena was a monster from mythology and legend. Often mistaken for a dragon, the amphisbaena differed in that instead of having one head and one tail, its body had two heads at opposite ends. While one head was awake, the other slept and vice versa, thus ensuring that it could never be caught off guard. Many valiant knights, thinking they were on the trail of a run-of-the-mill dragon found themselves dinner for the dreaded amphisbaena.
